The
hill stations of Kerala are dense in vegetation and provide
natural habitat to exotic wildlife. Spices such as pepper,
cardamom, cinnamon and the cashew nut are grown in the
plantations on these hills in Kerala. The Dutch and English
colonial rulers of Kerala introduced cash crops plantations
such as rubber and tea in the 18th and 19th centuries,
which is being continued till today.
Ponmudi
Ponmudi a hill station loaded with beauty, peace &
greenery is situated at a distance of 61 km from Thiruvananthapuram
and at an altitude of 1000 m above the sea level.. The
hill station is a welcome spot where you can relax in
the lap of nature breaking away from the bustle of the
city life. People with passion for trekking and long leisure
walks must explore the hill station of Ponmudi. There
is a lot to see and behold like hills, valleys tea-estates
and cottages
Munnar
Munnar, a paradise located at an
altitude of 1,600 m, is one of the most beautiful hill
stations of Kerala. Munnar has the highest elevation,
Anamundi in south India,. Which raises to a height of
whooping 2695 m This hill station was the most favored
summer destination of European settlers for centuries.
Munnar actually means the 'Three Rivers' and derives its
name from the three-mountain stream, Muthirapuzha, Nallathanni
and Kundala. Munnar an ideal destination for a peaceful
vacation offers many a beautiful and exotic locales. Including
lakes, dams, wild life sanctuaries and tea and spice plantations.
Altitude - 5000 to 8000 Ft above sea level.
Idukki
Idukki derives its name from a Malayalam
word 'Idukki ', which means narrow gorge. Idukki is known
as the land of massive mountains, variegated valleys and
splendid streams. Located in the southern portion of Kerala,
Idukki offers diverse tourist attractions like Thekkady
& other hill ranges, mountain treks, spice plantations,
and wild life sanctuaries. The Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary
is the prime attraction of the hill town of Idukki. It
is spread over an area of 70 sq km in the vicinity of
the Arched Dam. Thekkady an exotic and wild beauty of
nature is at a distance of almost 65 km from Idukki. The
place is visited for its unspoilt beauty of the nature
and vast wildlife population.
Palakkad
Palakkad also known as Palghat lies
on the foothills of the Western Ghats. On the border of
Kerala and Tamil Nadu, Palakkad is 80 km towards northeast
of Trichur and 50 km towards southwest of Coimbatore.
Palakkad attracts a lots of tourists every year because
richness of the natural beauty of the dense forests, fertile
valleys, huge mountains, long rivers, several streams
and diverse flora and fauna.The most popular attraction
here is Malampuzha Dam & Garden, located at a convenient
distance of 10 km from Palakkad on the lower hills of
the Western Ghats.
Vagamon
Vagamon is truly a paradise for the seekers
of peace and tranquility, is located at 1100 m above the
sea level is well within accessible distance from Cochin
and 60 km from Kottayam. The hill station is surrounded
by tea estates and will soon become India's foremost Eco-Tourism
Project. Three chains of hills, namely, Thangal hill,
Murugan hill and Kurisumala, surround Vagamon.Vagamon
is a popular spot for trekkers, paragliding, mountaineering
and rock climbing apart from these there are also some
exciting spots like Placid lakes and dense forest areas.
Vagamon is also a perfect base station for the tourists
who wish to explore other nearby hill stations such as
Thekkady, Kurisumala, Thangalpara, Muruganmala and Kulamavu.
