Backwaters
once considered, as the mode for inland transport is now
the tourist hotspot of Kerala. Spread across in different
districts of Kerala the natural setup and the ambience
of these locations are simply enchanting The state's palm-fringed
backwaters are inland lakes connected by a network of
canals. With 41 west-flowing rivers, the backwaters stretch
to almost 1,900 kilometers.
Kuttanad
called the rice bowl of Kerala throws out the most interesting
and attractive backwater setup This probably the only
region in kerala where farming is done below sea level,
adopting the system of dykes and bunds.
Vembanad
Lake is considered as the one having the largest stretch
of backwater, which opens out into the sea at the Kochi
port and flows through three districts-Alappuzha, Kottayam
and Kochi. The Ashtamudi Lake of Kollam district in the
south is the second largest lake in the state.
Alappuzha
also known as "The Venice of the East". Acts
as the Hub for backwater boat trips Small but long country
boats are used as the supporting transport facility to
travel through these narrow canals and one can witness
the coir workers presenting an interesting sight of the
process with a background layout of endless lines of coconut
trees.
The Capital,
its neighboring district kollam and the commercial hub
Cochin also houses few breathtaking locales of backwaters
with excellent facilities for the entertainment leisure
of the tourists.
